Lena: Welcome to my apartment!
Mark: It’s nice! What’s this room?
Lena: This is the living room. There’s a sofa and a small table.
Mark: I like the lamp. It’s beautiful and very bright.
Lena: Thanks! Next to the dining room is the kitchen. There are two chairs and a big table.
Mark: Don’t you work from home. Do you have a desk?
Lena: Yes, there’s a desk in my bedroom.
Mark: Is there a mirror in your room?
Lena: Yes, there is. It’s next to the bed.

Grammar

There is / There are

We use to say “there is” / “there are” to talk about existence or location.

We use there is (there’s) for one thing and there are for more than one.

  • There is a lamp in the room.
  • There are two chairs in the kitchen.
  • There is a table next to the window.

Student A (The Host): Your friend is visiting your new house.

Student B (The Guest): You are visiting your friends’ new house.
Ask them questions about the room in their house.
Remember to use:
Is there…? / Are there…? / Where is…?
