Listening

Marta stared at her reflection in the studio’s mirror—awkward, trembling, and years out of practice. Beside her, the instructor moved like water: lithe, poised, and seemingly born to bend. Marta felt every extra pound clinging to her—obese, by medical standards. She hated the word.

The other students were friendly, but one woman, an intense adherent of the studio’s “clean lifestyle,” made no effort to hide her disapproval. “You might want the beginner’s class,” she offered Marta with a too-sweet smile. Marta just nodded, cheeks burning.

The first few weeks were difficult. She sweated through downward dogs, wobbled through warrior poses, and groaned through pigeon stretches. But something shifted. Her muscles grew steadier. Her breath, deeper. One day, mid-pose, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror—not graceful, but powerful. Determined.

Later, that same woman from the first day scoffed at Marta’s mat placement. “You’re in my usual spot,” she complained.

Marta smiled. “You’ll live.” Her voice didn’t shake this time.

Walking home in the golden light, sore but proud, Marta felt a flicker of something close to bliss. Not perfection, but peace.

She wasn’t trying to be the most flexible. She wasn’t shrinking herself to please others.

And that woman? Her insecurity was almost pathetic, really.

  1. Have you ever felt judged for trying something new? How did you respond? (use: pathetic, adherent)

  2. Is it possible to find bliss in uncomfortable or unfamiliar situations? Why or why not?

  3. What are society’s assumptions about obese people? How do media and culture shape these views?

  4. In your opinion, what does it mean to be lithe? Is it only physical?

  5. How can we challenge pathetic stereotypes about strength, fitness, or self-worth?

  6.
