It’s February, and you’d expect coats, scarves, and maybe even snow. But instead, we’re seeing temperatures in the 70s—definitely not what you’d call typical winter weather.
What’s even more unusual is the rain. It has been coming down non-stop all week, five days in a row, with barely enough time to dry off before the next wave of showers begins. There have been a few breaks here and there, with the sun poking through the clouds for a short while, but then it quickly clouds over again.
Many residents are surprised—and a little frustrated—by this weather. “You can’t plan anything,” one local told me. “Just when you think the sun is back, the sky turns gray again.”
According to meteorologists, the worst of the storm will hit this Friday, with heavy winds and up to 4 inches of rain expected in just one day. If the rain continues through the weekend, there’s a real possibility of flooding in low-lying areas. Emergency services are already preparing sandbags and asking people to avoid unnecessary travel.
But it’s not all bad news. The good news is that some of the storms are expected to die out by Saturday, and we may even get a full day of sunshine on Sunday. So while it’s a messy week, there’s still hope for a nice weekend.
“We just have to look on the bright side,” another local said. “At least it’s not freezing cold. And if the sun comes out, we’ll definitely make the most of it.”
Wind speeds are expected to pick up Thursday night, so take precautions, especially if you live near trees or have outdoor furniture.
Even though the weather is far from ideal, some people are trying to enjoy the warmth and fresh air between showers. “We went for a walk this morning,” one woman told me. “There was a dry patch for about 30 minutes, and we thought—why not?”
As unpredictable as this February has been, one thing’s for sure: it’s giving people something to talk about. Let’s just hope Mother Nature gives us a bit of a break this weekend.
